How PRP Injections Work

PRP therapy is a minimally invasive procedure, performed in-office, that leverages your body’s natural healing abilities to repair damaged tissues and reduce pain. The process involves 3 simple steps:

Step 1: Blood Draw

A small sample of your blood is drawn, similar to a routine lab test. This blood contains platelets, which are rich in growth factors essential for tissue repair.

Step 2: Centrifugation & Platelet Concentration

The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge machine that spins to separate and concentrate the platelets from other blood components. This results in a powerful platelet-rich plasma solution.

Step 3: Precision-Guided PRP Injection

Using advanced imaging technology, such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, the PRP solution is carefully injected into the affected joint, tendon, or muscle. This ensures precise placement for maximum healing and pain relief.

FAQs About PRP Injections

If you’re considering Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy at Optima Orthopedics in Oklahoma City, you may have questions about the procedure, recovery, and more. Here are answers to some of the most common FAQs:

How long does PRP therapy take?

The PRP injection procedure typically takes 45–60 minutes from start to finish. This includes the blood draw, the centrifugation process to separate the platelets, and the precise injection into the targeted area. Since it’s an in-office treatment, you can return home shortly after the procedure.

Most patients begin to experience pain relief and improved mobility within 2 to 6 weeks after the injection. However, the full benefits of PRP therapy continue to develop over several months as the body’s natural healing process progresses. Some patients may need multiple treatments for optimal results.

Discomfort during the injection is usually minimal. Since PRP is injected directly into damaged tissues, some patients may experience mild soreness or pressure at the injection site. However, numbing agents and precision-guided techniques help minimize discomfort. Any post-injection soreness typically resolves within a few days.
